Following an 18-month-long battle with cancer, David Bowie passed away on January 10. Throughout his decorated career that spanned over five decades, the visionary had actually never appeared on 60 Minutes. However, CBS News recently shared that a Bowie segment had been in the works since 2003. 60 Minutes editor Robert Zimet had arranged numerous sessions with the icon and recorded a collection of material, although the profile ultimately remained unfinished due to correspondent conflicts. The never-before-seen Bowie tapes have now been released, revealing a complex artist who likens his approach to music to a search for God. “There’s an effort to reclaim the unmentionable, the unsayable, the unspeakable, all those things come into being a composer, into writing music, into searching for notes and pieces of musical information that don’t exist,” he says.

As 60 Minutes Overtime reviews the set of interviews, a dynamic portrait is painted of a creative genius who undoubtedly paved the way for art, culture, music and fashion for generations to come. From his humble admission to never thinking of himself as a singer to describing his first time in a recording studio, the documentary feature is a thought-provoking retrospective that honors the memory of one of the greatest artists of our generation. You can watch Bowie’s introduction above and can head over to CBS News online to watch more unaired clips.
