Data mining student Eric Malmi recently created Raplyzer, an algorithmic program that analyzes hip-hop lyrics by gauging the best multi-syllable rhymes, and ranks rappers on the basis of their so-called flow. Currently, Wu-Tang Clan member Inspectah Deck holds the number one position, followed by the likes of Rakim and Earl Sweatshirt. While computerized programs are not always perfect, it’s still interesting to see artist’s rhymes being measured in a precise, calculated way, based on their syllables and vowel sounds. Accents and slang are not taken into consideration either. Classic hip-hop heavyweight such as Dr. Dre, Ice Cube and Snoop Dogg are placed near the end of the chart, to which many would disagree with such rankings. Check out Raplyzer here.
