When Jason Collins came out as the first openly gay active player in the NBA, it was news that quietly rocked the sports community as a whole. But was it really that much of a surprise? After all, athletes come in all forms, and sexual identity has little to do with competition performance. With Pride Month kicking off its festivities in June, Nike is set to play a supporting role by launching the new #BETRUE Collection, a set of custom footwear dedicated to raising awareness for the LGBT community in sports. The collection consists of four key components: the Free Run 5.0, the Solarsoft Men’s Thong Sandal, men’s and women’s graphic tees, and an iPhone 5 case. Profits from the sale of these items will be donated to the LGBT Sports Coalition, which actively seeks to eradicate discrimination in sport. To support the movement, look for the #BETRUE collection on Nike’s web store, as well as at Nike retail locations in Chicago, New York, Portland and more.
