Opening today is the Dieter Rams ‘Less And More’ exhibition at the Design Museum in London. Dieter Rams was the director at the German electronics manufacturer Braun for over 30 years and is known globally for his simple and elegant aesthetics. He has created a blueprint for the designs of today and even heavily influenced an upcoming UNDERCOVER S/S Mens collection, where Jun Takahashi followed the tones and details of Dieter Rams’ work and placed them in the context of fashion. The exhibition is a retrospective of Dieter Ram’s career and showcasing his ground breaking designs for both Braun and Vitsoe. The event runs from today to March 7th 2010.

A lot of people here are not aware of design. I have been a product designer for 4 years professionally and finally starting to understand it. To make something simple is the hardest part. You are not only dealing with aesthetic but everything from components, user experience, marketing and buyers. So to be able to achieve simplicity at his level, it is just amazing. It is not about the look but the experience. You guys should watch OBJECTIFIED, its a movie about industrial design.

I think Dieter Rams is most correct with his simple belief that good design is unobtrusive.

Ruds, your comment baffles me… you must really be a total douche.

Minimalism is not an aesthetic style. It is an intelligent, honest way of delivering a product without the bullshit seen these days.

@ Ruds Clanker this is a retrospective so of course it’s going to seem overdone now. it wasn’t then. that’s not his ethos for design now.

Speaking as a designer this guy was way ahead of his times.
The whole minimalistic thing may seem overdone but if you look at it in context to his time where everything was gaudy and just used to show off he created things with function.
If you look at the products he designed they were all household items…they served a purpose and he made them not intimidating and easy to use.

WORRD UP! Glad to see you covering Industrial Designers! The people who truly appreciate this type of stuff just don’t find it necessary to comment! I DID!

dieter rams is the godfather of design, the best part of bauhaus!
and without his influences we would have no apple fundamental design .

This dude is an OG.. in response to Ruds.. he’s no newjack, he has evey right to do the minimal shit.. he fucking invented it!!

There’s a lot to criticize here in my opinion. Lets start with how it comes across pretty pretentious. Also, doesn’t it look a bit cluttered and tacky for an exhibit with the premise of simplicity and minimalism?
“Especially the cars. They changed their styling every two years to sell new ones. Which has nothing to do with good design.” What IS good design? Are we talking functionality? If that’s the case, when it comes to cars, the “styling” has all to do with aesthetics and very little to do with functionality. From an aesthetical point of view, good design changes. Fashion changes. That’s a prominent and inherent trait to fashion.

    This guy’s a dbag.

He doesnt say “Less is more” but ” Less AND more”..

  16. Posted by:Dennis on November 18, 2009 at 6:57 pm

I think you’re missing the point of his quote and body of work.

  17. Posted by:Ruds Clanker on November 18, 2009 at 5:47 pm

I know it sounds douchey, but the whole ‘less is more’/minimalist aesthetic is really tired and overdone. Time to move on.
