Sony Music has acquired the music catalog of Queen for a whopping £1 billion GBP, or approximately $1.27 billion USD.

Two sources tell Variety that a number of unspecified rights will join the package on top of the band’s catalog, while HITS Daily Double reports that their profit from live performances will not be part of the deal; founding members Brian May and Roger Taylor, who currently tour with Adam Lambert, will continue to hold on to those rights. The band’s worldwide licensing deal with UMG will be given to Sony Music when it expires in either 2026 or 2027, and will officially make the company the worldwide distributor and owner of all the content.

Another party was supposedly in a tight bidding war against Sony Music, but backed out when the price reached $900 million USD.
