Raf Simons

Raf Simons is the eponymous label of Raf Simons, a Belgian fashion designer founded in 1995. The label began with a menswear line shown primarily through presentations or videos. The brand solidifying the label’s aesthetic inspired by rebellious youth culture, fused with traditional menswear. Simons held his first runway show for the label in 1997. Simons temporarily shut down his label in March 2000 to recoup, only relaunching in Fall/Winter 2001 after striking a new deal with Belgian manufacturer Gysemans Clothing Industry. Often referencing music and the youth, Simons’ creations for his namesake label have yielded critical acclaim, garnering him the Swiss Textiles Award in 2003 with €100,000 EUR in material benefits. In October 2004, the company underwent a restructure that saw a new distribution deal, and then a pivotal collection for fall/winter 2005 that saw the brand let go of its youth aesthetic and embrace wholly shapes and forms, creating the renowned silhouette mastery that Raf Simons is known for. In 2005, a lower-priced diffusion line Raf by Raf Simons was launched, which was renamed Raf Simons 1995 in 2011. By 2008, the first two standalone Raf Simons stores were opened in Tokyo and Osaka.
