Converse is an American shoe company, best known for the canvas All Star shoe, founded by Marquis Mills in 1908. One of the well known series Chuck Taylor All Star brought success to Converse, with Chuck made adjustment to the sneaker to provide greater support and flexibility on its functionality and made it one of the greatest basketball shoe with history. Today, Converse produces its All-Stars footwear in a variety of materials, shapes and colour ways, having successfully bridged the gap between professional sneaker and smart-casual. In 1908, Marquis Mills Converse founded the Converse Rubber Shoe Company in Malden, Massachusetts. Despite initially selling mass-produced rubber soled footwear, the company branched out in 1917 and began manufacturing athletic shoes specifically designed for basketball, the All Star. The high-topped sneaker, destined to become the best selling shoe in history for elite level basketball players, featured a rubber sole and a canvas upper body. Integral to the All Star’s success was professional basketball player Chuck Taylor. In 1921, Taylor began working with Converse on the design of the shoe. Taylor subsequently travelled the U.S. as a basketball coach, whilst acting as a salesman for Converse. In 1932, the company honoured his legacy by renaming the shoe the Chuck Taylor All Star, adding his signature to the hi-top All Star patch. Aided by a long list of prominent musicians and offbeat subcultures adopting the sneaker as a casual everyday shoe, All Stars have become a cult classic and a celebration of alternative style. In 2003, Nike paid $309 million USD to acquire the Converse brand name.
