The fashion industry is finally catching up to Stella McCartney, who has made sustainable pieces a part of her brand since its inception. “Sustainability” is one of the industry’s biggest buzzwords of 2019, but for McCartney it’s always been more than a trend. Her collaboration with adidas has exemplified that commitment to Earth-friendly practices, and this year McCartney introduced a new kind of technology to liquify existing cotton into fresh new material for her adidas line. But the biggest news for McCartney in 2019 is on the business front; last year the designer retook ownership of her brand from Kering, and a year later she sold a minority stake in the company right to Kering’s major competitor, LVMH, stirring up major headlines across the fashion world. Her involvement with LVMH doesn’t stop there as McCartney also took on a role as special advisor on sustainability to LVMH CEO Bernard Arnault. Given LVMH’s powerhouse status, we only hope that will lead to larger changes across the industry.
