STANITEMS Turns 3D Modeling Into an Instrument With Form Synthesizer
The experimental interface replaces conventional CAD workflows with tactile controls for shaping digital forms in real time.
Summary
STANITEMS introduced the Form Synthesizer, a physical instrument for digital 3D modeling.
Utilizing knobs and faders, it replaces complex CAD commands with real-time tactile gestures.
Currently generating vases, the prototype aims to expand into furniture and architectural design.
STANITEMS is rethinking the conventions of digital 3D modeling with the Form Synthesizer, a design project that replaces the familiar mouse-and-keyboard workflow with the immediacy of a physical instrument.
Conceived around the idea of “playing with form” in the same way a musician manipulates sound, the device translates hands-on gestures into changes to a digital object, turning modeling into a more tactile and fluid creative process. Instead of navigating layers of software menus, users interact through tangible, analog-style controls, shifting the focus from clicking commands toward continuous physical experimentation. The result sits somewhere between a design tool and an instrument, challenging the computer interfaces that have defined digital creation for decades.
That musical analogy also shapes the Form Synthesizer’s aesthetic and interaction philosophy. Physical knobs, faders and other direct controls give the device the character of hardware studio equipment, with each adjustment intended to manipulate digital geometry in real time. Compared with earlier iterations of the project, which explored different tangible interfaces including a linear fader, the current version develops those experiments into a more cohesive, dedicated system supported by custom electronics and software.
Its first application is deliberately focused: the present prototype generates vase forms, allowing variations to emerge through physical input rather than conventional CAD commands. This narrow starting point functions as a proof of concept for a much broader ambition, with STANITEMS envisioning the same interface eventually shaping furniture, objects, sculptures, jewelry and architectural elements.
For now, Form Synthesizer remains a developing design and research project rather than a commercially released product. For more information, head over to STANITEMS’ official website.
