‘47, the casual lifestyle brand founded in Boston in 1947, has announced “JAPAN 9,” a new collaborative project tapping fashion curator Motofumi “POGGY” Kogi alongside nine Japanese brands. Starting today, Wednesday, September 30, all nine baseball cap styles are available for presale at an exclusive pop-up at Isetan Shinjuku.

“JAPAN 9” is a project inspired by ’47’s baseball roots and the nine players that make up a team on the field. Positioning POGGY as the team manager, the collection features one cap design from each of the nine brands he selected as the future of Japanese fashion.

The participating lineup includes ANCELLM, beta post, KANEMASA PHIL., KHOKI, mister it., mukcyen, PROLETA RE ART, ssstein, and YOKE. Each brand infused the ‘47 baseball cap with its signature approach to materials, treatments, and tailoring techniques.

The creative approaches are as diverse as the brands themselves. ANCELLM applied a specialized wash to horsehide leather for a perfectly lived-in look. beta post combined mixed materials to recreate the texture of cardboard, while KANEMASA PHIL. relied on a proprietary cotton-nylon blend to deliver an elegant, supple sheen. KHOKI started with a Dodgers cap as the base, elevating it with calf leather and meticulous detailing for a totally unique finish.

mister it. designed a custom cover that doubles as a hat or mini bag. mukcyen showcased delicate fabrics and meticulous pattern matching, while PROLETA RE ART brought its signature hand-reconstructed vintage treatments to the table. Rounding out the collection, ssstein opted for high-density corduroy, and YOKE cleverly used leather disguised as denim. Ultimately, the familiar baseball cap serves as a canvas, allowing wearers to experience the distinct craftsmanship of all nine labels.

The “JAPAN 9” pop-up runs from Wednesday, September 30, to Tuesday, October 6, at the 1st Floor Promotion space in the Isetan Shinjuku Men’s Building. Select items will be available on the Mitsukoshi Isetan online store during this period, with a wider release planned for mid-October on the official ‘47 online store.

Hypebeast Japan caught up with POGGY to discuss his curation process. We have also released an Instagram video featuring the curator himself breaking down all nine cap styles one by one.
