The Leica Summicron-M 66 f/2 is a newly released addition to the brand’s Classic Line, serving as a reinterpretation of a highly historic and rare piece of military optics. Originally developed in the late 1960s as the Elcan 66 mm f/2 by optical pioneer Dr. Walter Mandler for the US Navy, the lens was built for covert reconnaissance and was intended to deliver unparalleled resolution in a discreet format.
Striking a delicate balance between fine contrast rendition, compact sizing, and an unconventional 66 mm focal length, only about 200 units of the original military specification were ever produced. Modernizing this storied heritage, the new Summicron-M 66 f/2 brings the exact same focal length and optical ethos to the public for the first time. Like all lenses in the Classic Line, the f/2 maximum speed delivers distinctive rendering characterized by high contrast and soft bokeh, while stepping down the aperture unleashes the maximum resolution originally demanded by naval intelligence for capturing minute details.
Limited to 660 units worldwide, each lens carries a special serial number and precise focal length engraving. Measuring approximately 60 mm in length and weighing 456 grams, it uses a Leica M bayonet with 6‑bit encoding and an E49 filter thread. The Summicron‑M 66 f/2 is available globally today via Leica, with the first‑numbered lens set to be auctioned at the Leitz Photographica Auction in November 2026.
