Japanese leather artisan brand Hender Scheme has partnered with renowned Finnish furniture house Artek to launch a highly imaginative collaborative collection. Centered around Alvar Aalto’s iconic Stool 60, the project playfully bridges the gap between footwear and homeware by introducing bespoke leather “shoes” specifically tailored for the stool’s signature L-shaped legs. This whimsical yet deeply artisanal concept reflects both brands’ shared dedication to enduring craftsmanship and material honesty. By outfitting a legendary piece of mid-century furniture with handcrafted leather footwear, the collaboration challenges traditional boundaries between fashion accessories and interior design, offering a fresh, tactile perspective on a beloved modern classic.
The stool shoes are crafted from Hender Scheme’s signature raw, vegetable-tanned leather, meticulously constructed to slip snugly over the wooden bases of the Stool 60. Much like Hender Scheme’s celebrated Manual Industrial Products (MIP) line – which famously reimagines iconic sneaker silhouettes in premium, undyed leather – this project relies on the inherent beauty of natural aging. Over time, the “leather shoes” will develop a rich, unique patina that perfectly complements the natural darkening of Artek’s birch wood.
Beyond the stool shoes, the collection also encompasses leather‑wrapped trays, baskets, and reinterpretations of Artek’s classic pieces, each infused with Hender Scheme’s signature raw leather aesthetic. These items highlight the tension between permanence and patina: while Artek’s furniture embodies timeless modernism, Hender Scheme’s untreated leather evolves with age, darkening and softening over time.
The Hender Scheme x Artek collection will officially be available starting October 10, 2026. Due to strictly limited quantities, these collaborative pieces can be purchased at Hender Scheme’s “Sukima” flagship, Artek Helsinki, Artek Tokyo and select retailers only while supplies last.
