Michael B. Jordan directs, produces and stars in Amazon MGM's reimagining of 'The Thomas Crown Affair,' the third screen take on the art-thief story

His version rewrites the character's motive, sending Crown after stolen or sold artifacts to return them to their rightful creators

Adria Arjona plays the former FBI agent tracking him heist by heist while Kenneth Branagh circles as a looming threat

Amazon MGM Studios has released the trailer for The Thomas Crown Affair, Michael B. Jordan‘s reimagining of the billionaire art-thief story that puts a pointed new spin on the character’s heists. Jordan directs and stars as Crown in the third screen iteration of the tale, and the footage frames the theft less as a rich man’s sport than as a mission with a conscience.

The reframe is the whole point. Where earlier versions cast Crown as a wealthy thrill-seeker, Jordan’s take gives him a cause: his true aim is to return precious stolen or sold artifacts to the people who created them. That motive reshapes the cat-and-mouse structure the franchise is known for, with Adria Arjona playing the former FBI agent hunting Crown heist by heist and Kenneth Branagh lurking as an insidious antagonist threatening to bring him down. The result reads as a heist thriller with its moral compass deliberately recalibrated.

Jordan has been explicit about why he rebuilt the story from the ground up. He told Variety in November, “I didn’t want a reboot. I wanted a reimagination. The first two films were about rich white guys stealing for fun. That doesn’t land today.” He continued, “Ours is more personal. The stakes are higher. Still got the fashion, romance.”

The production carries a notable pedigree behind the camera as well. Drew Pearce wrote the script from a previous draft by Wes Tooke and Justin Britt-Gibson, working from the 1968 original that starred Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway, the film later remade in 1999 with Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo. Jordan produces alongside Elizabeth Raposo for Outlier Society, with Charles Roven for Atlas Entertainment, plus Patrick McCormick and Toberoff Productions’ Marc Toberoff. Alan Trustman, who wrote the original film, executive produces. The trailer first debuted at CinemaCon in April, arriving with Jordan fresh off his Best Actor Oscar win for Sinners, his first Academy nomination and victory, earned for Ryan Coogler’s vampire horror film.
