Director Peter Berg confirmed at Fanatics Fest that the upcoming live-action 'Call of Duty' film is set in the 'Modern Warfare' universe

Written by 'Yellowstone' creator Taylor Sheridan, the feature adaptation is being produced alongside Paramount Pictures and David Ellison

The film is scheduled to hit theaters on June 30, 2028, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the video game franchise

Paramount Pictures and Activision have officially confirmed that the upcoming Call of Duty feature film will be set within the fan-favorite Modern Warfare universe. Director and co-writer Peter Berg revealed the setting during the “Call of Duty in Culture” panel at Fanatics Fest in New York City.

Scripted by Sicario and Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan, the high-stakes military actioner marks the long-awaited live-action debut for gaming’s most lucrative FPS franchise. Selecting the Modern Warfare subseries anchors the narrative in the property’s most recognizable lore, which centers around elite special operations forces battling global tactical threats. The storyline will reportedly feature signature characters like Captain John Price, Soap MacTavish, and Ghost.

Produced alongside David Ellison and developed in close coordination with senior gaming leads at Microsoft, the big-screen project aims to lay the foundation for a broader cinematic universe spanning film and television. Microsoft’s president of game content Matt Booty emphasized that Sheridan’s character-driven storytelling offers the ideal creative match to translate the two-decade-old franchise into a broad-canvas theatrical experience.

The Call of Duty movie is scheduled to arrive in theaters on June 30, 2028.
