Sydney-based label Song for the Mute and adidas Running have unveiled “The First Breath,” a collaboration that marks a deliberate shift from traditional performance toward a more human, emotional perspective. Brand Director Melvin Tanaya explains that the project was never about competing with high-level athletics, but rather reframing performance as something “instinctive, personal, and inclusive”. Creative Director Lyna Ty adds that the collection aims to capture the “imperfect energy” and rawness of starting something new, focusing on the “in-between moments” of movement rather than elite metrics. This approach results in a “quietly rebellious” entry point into the sport, bridging technical design with a narrative rooted in the beauty of beginnings.
The collection is centered on a reinterpreted Supernova Rise 3 – an everyday running shoe appearing in deep earth tones with hand-drawn midsole graphics – and the Adi365 apparel system. Ty’s vision, as noted in her conceptual journals, celebrates the “misfits” of the ‘song’ community: everyday 9-5 workers or parents catching their “first breath” on a 2-5km run around the block or through the city. This sentimental attachment is reflected in the design elements, where seams, panels, and logos appear as intentionally unresolved sketches on a palette of coffee, carbon, and ivory. The range includes tanks, tees, and shorts in men’s, women’s, and unisex fits, blending high-performance function with a carefree, non-elite attitude.
The collection is set for a global release on April 2 through adidas and select retailers.
