While the upcoming Deadpool and Wolverine is slated to be one of the most successful films coming out this summer, it almost did not happen. Poised to bring Ryan Reynolds back to the big screens alongside Hugh Jackman who is reprising his iconic X-Men role of Wolverine, Marvel head honcho recently spoke to Empire that he originally warned against having Jackman come back.

In the interview, Feige expressed his concerns, “I said, ‘Let me give you a piece of advice, Hugh. Don’t come back. You had the greatest ending in history with Logan. That’s not something we should undo.’” However, he later got on board when he learned that Jackman would not be playing the previous version that audiences grew to love of Logan/Wolverine. Jackman later added in a new interview that Deadpool and Wolverine will show “different sides of Wolverine we haven’t seen before in the movies.”

In another Empire conversation, Feige told the publication that he actually initally rejected Reynolds’ original pitch for the third Deadpool film. He first saw Deadpool 3 as a “Rashomon” story that saw a Wolverine and Deadpool story told form different perspectives. Feige turned down the pitch claiming, “The truth is, I wasn’t even sure how to incorporate Deadpool yet. I was very much thinking about how to bring mutants and the X-Men into [the MCU], and I thought it needed to be more than just playing the hits. But the truth is, Ryan is an idea machine. So he may have pitched that to me, but he also pitched 25 other thoughts and ideas.”

Fans can catch Deadpool and Wolverine in theaters on July 26.
