Summary

Phillips will auction a rare 1999 F.P. Journe Chronomètre à Résonance this November at its Geneva Watch Auction: XXIV sale.

Estimated to fetch up to 1 million CHF (approx. $1.12 million USD), this pre-production watch is the earliest commercially numbered example of the model.

Phillips in Association with Bacs & Russo will spotlight one of the most historically significant independent timepieces at the upcoming Geneva Watch Auction: XXIV this November. The highly anticipated lot is an ultra-rare, pre-production F.P. Journe Chronomètre à Résonance, which carries a pre-sale estimate of 500,000 – 1 million CHF (approx. $617,270 – $1.12 million USD).

Officially launched to the public in 2000, the Chronomètre à Résonance made horological history as the world’s first wristwatch to successfully harness the physical phenomenon of resonance. By utilizing two closely positioned balance wheels that subtly influence each other to synchronize their oscillations, the innovative movement drastically improves the watch’s overall timekeeping consistency. Belonging to a group of only about ten Pre‑Production examples, this reference predates the better‑known Souscription and Pre‑Souscription Resonance watches. Its rarity is underscored by distinctive features including shallow caseback engravings, a shiny pink gold dial with silver subdials, and a brass movement — details highly coveted by collectors of early F.P. Journe creations.

With recent auction records for Journe watches reaching into the tens of millions, the appearance of this earliest numbered Resonance marks a once‑in‑a‑generation opportunity for collectors. Phillips will present the watch at the Hotel President, Geneva, on November 7 – 8, 2026, with previews available in the days leading up to the sale. For more information regarding the sale, head over to the designated webpage via Phillips’ website.
