Toei and TANGLE have officially launched the ReVIBES Project, a new collaborative initiative that reimagines some of Japan’s most iconic IPs through contemporary art. Moving beyond nostalgia and conventional collaborations, the project transforms beloved classics into collectible artworks, introducing them to a new generation of collectors and the global art market

For its inaugural edition, the project tapped internationally renowned collage artist, graphic designer, and art director Kosuke Kawamura to deconstruct and reassemble COBRA — Buichi Terasawa’s legendary sci-fi manga classic. The resulting two physical art pieces made their high-profile auction debut in Tokyo, fetching a combined ¥3.5 million JPY (approx. $24,000 USD). As Hiroto Munakata, representative of TANGLE and the mastermind behind the project’s concept, explains: “This is not about reviving IP, but about reconstructing its value. We are not selling nostalgia — we want to show how masterpieces can be updated for the present day.”

Why COBRA?

First serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1978, COBRA follows a rogue space pirate armed with a psychological, arm-embedded “Psycho-Gun”. Infusing a singular universe with hard-boiled storytelling, cosmic action, and sharp humor, the manga immediately became a cornerstone of Japanese pop culture and has since been translated into over a dozen languages.

Crucially, creator Buichi Terasawa was a legendary innovator who pioneered the integration of computer graphics into comic production, famously coining the term “digital manga”. Reinterpreting this exact spirit of technical disruption through a modern artistic lens forms the perfect foundation for ReVIBES Project.

For Toei, the initiative represents a vital method for archival management. “No matter how great a work may be, the passage of time can gradually reduce it to something known only by a dedicated few,” notes Rintaro Shimatani of Toei. “Through ReVIBES Project, we believe these works can reach audiences they never had the opportunity to connect with before.”

Kosuke Kawamura’s Deconstruction

Known for his cross-disciplinary portfolio spanning fashion, street culture, music and advertising, Kosuke Kawamura was uniquely suited to bridge the gap between subculture and high art. Interestingly, Kawamura’s initial exposure to COBRA was through its television anime adaptation as a child, which he remembered as a “scary series”. It wasn’t until junior high school that he picked up the source material and discovered its undeniable coolness.

When it came time to manipulate the raw assets, Terasawa’s exceptional draftsmanship proved to be a double-edged sword. “It wasn’t just the characters — every background, every small detail looked incredible,” Kawamura notes. “Deciding what to keep and what to leave out was by far the hardest part of the process.”

Ultimately, Kawamura realized two distinct original works. “No.001 COLLAGE”: A dynamic multi-character composition layering the vast cast of COBRA. The central subject’s hair is finished with a mirrored metal canvas treatment, creating a kinetic viewing experience that shifts depending on light and perspective. It hammered down at ¥1.4 million JPY (around $8,684 USD).

“No.002 SHREDDER” is executed in Kawamura’s signature industrial shredder aesthetic. By physically fragmenting the original manga’s heavy linework and explosive panel layouts before carefully hand-layering the strips back together, he offers an entirely fresh abstract perspective while preserving the energy of the source text. This piece reached ¥2.1 million JPY (approx. $13,032 USD) at the SBI Art Auction.

Testing the Market Horizon

The official auction took place at Tokyo’s INSPIRATION CULT BAR & GALLERY in collaboration with the prestigious SBI Art Auction. The event drew collectors both in-person and digitally from across the globe, presenting a comprehensive cultural look that displayed original vintage manga volumes and collectible figures alongside Kawamura’s new contemporary works.

The success of the auction goes far beyond the ¥3.5 million JPY price tag; it serves as the ultimate proof of concept for how global collectors respond when beloved pop culture heritage is elevated to the fine art market. “Someone who has only ever been interested in manga might discover contemporary art through this, and the reverse can happen as well,” says Kawamura. “What excites me is the opportunity to create a new point of entry for both worlds.”

Looking ahead, ReVIBES Project is already developing its second landmark IP and artist collaboration. The initiative plans to scale its rollout internationally through global gallery exhibitions, domestic and foreign art fairs and specialized distribution channels. As the boundaries between street culture, anime, and high art continue to permanently blur, ReVIBES Project is carving out a definitive blueprint for how the world honors and inherits cultural legacies.
