Karimoku is bringing MAS’ idea of “New Japanese Comfort” into a more immersive setting with “Oyado MAS,” a special exhibition transforming the first-floor gallery of Karimoku Commons Tokyo into an imagined Japanese inn.
Founded in 2018 under Design Director Wataru Kumano, MAS has developed its furniture through an ongoing dialogue with Japan’s forests, with a particular focus on softwoods and the possibilities they offer for contemporary living. Rather than presenting the collection as isolated objects, Oyado MAS places the pieces within a holistic environment inspired by the rhythms and hospitality of an oyado, allowing furniture, light, craft and everyday objects to collectively define a new vision of domestic comfort.
The installation expands on MAS’ functional, understated design language, where the warmth and familiarity of timber are balanced by clean proportions and forms intended to feel relevant beyond a single stylistic moment. Here, that approach is contextualized alongside work from NEW LIGHT POTTERY, Nao Tesuki Washi, SEKISAKA, sheep and sinso, collaborators that also joined MAS during this year’s 3daysofdesign. Bringing these different makers under one roof introduces layers of lighting, handmade paper, objects and textiles around the furniture, creating a lived-in atmosphere closer to an actual guesthouse than a conventional showroom. The result emphasizes material texture and quiet utility over spectacle, presenting Japanese craftsmanship as something integrated naturally into daily routines.
In that sense, Oyado MAS builds on the brand’s previous presentations by shifting the focus from individual furniture pieces toward the relationships between objects, people and space. The imaginary inn format offers visitors an opportunity to experience how MAS’ collection functions within a broader interior ecosystem, reinforcing its pursuit of universally approachable design while grounding it in distinctly Japanese materials and sensibilities. “Oyado MAS” is on view at Karimoku Commons Tokyo until October 20, 2026, presenting the brand’s evolving interpretation of comfort through furniture, craft and contemporary hospitality.
