Summary

Art Basel Paris has announced that it will close its 2026 edition early, ending on Friday, October 23, instead of Sunday, October 25, as initially planned

The decision has been confirmed via emails to exhibitors and a public announcement, citing fears for visitors' safety as protests continue to erupt across the French capital

Several museums, galleries, and alternative fairs are also adjusting their schedules to account for upcoming protests

Art Basel Paris is cutting its fifth edition short, shutting the fair after Friday, October 23. The fair told exhibitors that the decision is “in the interest of safeguarding our visitors,” in a recent email shared Wednesday afternoon, and comes amid concerns of protests unfolding across the French capital this weekend.

The fifth edition, gathering 211 galleries, was set to run through Sunday, October 25 at the Grand Palais. Art Basel brought in additional security measures — concrete anti-ram barriers and 24-hour patrols — for VIP previews so far following a temporary lockdown during installation earlier this week. Public viewing and in-person programming now solely consists of Friday’s schedule.

“We deeply regret that we will not be able to welcome visitors this weekend, and extend our sincere appreciation to our galleries, artists, partners, visitors, and wider community around our fair,” Art Basel wrote in an Instagram post.

Several French platforms, labor unions, and advocacy groups whose work centers issues of censorship and labor conditions within France’s contemporary art scene issued calls for protests both outside and within the fair on Saturday.

The Parisian art week coincides with one of the biggest protests the country has seen in years. Protests, some escalating into riots and looting, have erupted across the country in light of Macron government’s budget cuts to the French public schooling system. A student movement crescendoed into outcry beyond education, including the rising cost of living and underfunded public services. Clashes with the police and property damage have since ensued, with Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu announcing military troops will be deployed this weekend.

Other ongoing Paris fairs and galleries, like Post-Fair, Fondation Louis Vuitton, and Gagosian, are adjusting their weekend schedules accordingly ahead of this weekend’s protests. Earlier this week, artist Alicja Kwade removed her sculpture, part of Art Basel Paris’ public program, from outside the Grand Palais due to “announced riots and people who simply want to resort to violence.”
