  • The show transports the sensory energy of Accra, Ghana to Los Angeles

For his third solo presentation with Roberts Projects, contemporary heavyweight Amoako Boafo is blurring the lines between creation and exhibition. Titled I Bring Home with Me, the show transports the sensory energy of Accra, Ghana to Los Angeles by physically recreating the artist’s studio within the gallery walls.

Opening on January 17, the exhibition is anchored by an architectural collaboration with designer Glenn DeRoche. The installation is more than a backdrop; it is a 1:1 scale exploration of “home” as a mobile concept. Visitors enter through a threshold of vibrant monstera-patterned wallpaper, moving into a structure defined by grid windows and light-filled passages that dissolve the boundary between interior and exterior.

Inside this reimagined sanctuary, Boafo presents a new suite of portraits rendered in his signature fingertip painting technique. Known for his intimate, gaze-forward depictions of Black subjectivity, Boafo integrates these works directly into the studio’s “walls” and within a folding wooden sculpture inspired by the Adinkra symbol nkyinkyim (“twisting”), a tribute to resilience.

By inviting viewers into this space, Boafo dismantles the traditional white cube, offering a fluid environment that mirrors the communal, multifunctional spirit of his actual workspace. The show offers a rare glimpse into the “elsewhere within here”—a synthesis of personal memory, family history, and the physical spaces that shape Black identity.

I Bring Home with Me is on view at Roberts Projects from January 17 through March 21.
