  • Lucas Simões is debuting his first furniture collection at the upcoming Lightness & Tension exhibition in Christie’s LA
  • Titled “Colendra,” the collection features sculptural dining table, bench, chaise and coffee tables in a Joaquim Tenreiro-esque modernistic aesthetic

Brazilian artist Lucas Simões debuts his first furniture collection, titled “Colendra” at Ulysses de Santi‘s upcoming Lightness & Tension exhibition. Extending his sculptural practice into design, Simões channels mid-century Brazilian modernism, most notably Joaquim Tenreiro,  to transform classic silhouettes into commanding, architectonic statements.

Throughout the range, Simões reinterprets classic silhouettes into bold, sculptural forms that command attention, embracing architecture, material experimentation, and the interplay of solidity and void. The collection comprises a dining table, a bench, a chaise lounge, and a suite of coffee tables, each articulated as a distinct statement piece. Its material palette and wavy profiles bridge modernist restraint with a contemporary flair for monumentality, showcasing how Simões uses raw materials such as metal, concrete, and glass to explore balance and contrast.

Tops of Patagonia Brazilian quartzite rest on angular steel frames, while polished concrete and tempered glass surfaces introduce contrasts of texture and transparency. The resulting effect feels at once weighty and fluid, nodding to the organic curves and rigorous geometry of Tenreiro’s originals. By merging an archetypal modernist restraint with a contemporary monumentality, Colendra celebrates Brazil’s design heritage while pushing its sculptural vocabulary forward.

Preview the collection in the range in the gallery above. Lucas Simões’ “Colendra” collection will be displayed at the Lightness & Tension exhibition in Christie’s Los Angeles from September  5- 19, 2025.
