Lucasfilm has officially announced the main cast for its upcoming film, Star Wars: Starfighter, revealing that Hollywood star Ryan Gosling and up-and-coming Irish actor Flynn Gray will lead the all-new adventure. The film, which has begun production in the U.K., is a standalone story set in an unexplored period of the Star Wars timeline.

The announcement of the cast comes with a first-look image of Gosling and Gray on set, which has ignited fan speculation. The black-and-white photo shows the two actors in what appears to be an arid landscape, standing next to a landspeeder that evokes a nostalgic feel reminiscent of Luke Skywalker’s iconic ride.

Gosling is set to play a character who must protect his young nephew, a role filled by Gray, from a pair of villains. The film sees Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams as part of the cast. The film’s director, Shawn Levy, has expressed his excitement about the project, stating, “I feel a profound sense of excitement and honor as we begin production on Star Wars: Starfighter.  From the day Kathy Kennedy called me up, inviting me to develop an original adventure in this incredible Star Wars galaxy, this experience has been a dream come true, creatively and personally. Star Wars shaped my sense of what story can do, how characters and cinematic moments can live with us forever. The film is set for a theatrical release on May 28, 2027.
