Originally launched in 2009, the Zeitwerk disrupted traditional watchmaking with its precisely switching jumping numerals mechanism. The 2019 addition of a ring-shaped date display – now rendered in printed glass – adds a dynamic layer of functionality, with a red marker that advances at midnight to indicate the current date.
This latest model retains the Zeitwerk’s signature time bridge in German silver, elegantly framing the hour and minute apertures along the dial’s central axis. The patented jumping numerals mechanism performs 1,440 switches per day, powered by a constant-force escapement that ensures consistent energy delivery. Both the hour and date displays can be independently adjusted via pushers at 4 and 8 o’clock, with each switching impulse triggered upon release. At midnight, the watch performs a captivating mechanical ballet as all three numeral discs and the date ring advance in unison.
Inside the 44.2 mm pink gold case beats the manually wound L043.8 caliber, composed of 516 parts and offering a 72-hour power reserve. Visible through the sapphire-crystal caseback, the movement showcases artisanal finishes such as solarized ratchet wheels.
