The Miami Art Society presented Tropical Brainstorm, a solo exhibition by Gustavo Oviedo at The Goodtime Hotel a Tribute Portfolio Hotel by Marriott Bonvoy. The show featured over 20 new works spanning paintings, ceramics and collages, alongside the debut of Oviedo’s latest art book of the same name.

Rooted in his experiences as a diver and underwater videographer, Tropical Brainstorm captured the tension between natural ecosystems and human debris. Oviedo drew from biomorphic forms and marine life observed during deep-sea expeditions, using recurring visual motifs, what he called “form families,” to mirror nature’s organized chaos.

At the core of the exhibition were his “Brainstorms,” cloud-and-lightning forms that served as visual meditations on improvisation, evolution, and interconnectedness. A 96-page companion book expanded on these themes through images of his 2024 works, including murals and underwater photography. Moreoover, artist Miguel Gonzalez presented a site-specific light installation synchronized to live jazz performances, rounding out the evening’s immersive, multidisciplinary experience.

The Goodtime Hotel, designed by Ken Fulk, draws from Miami’s historic style with a mix of art deco elements, vintage accents, and bold interiors. Key features include a lush atrium, a mural-lined lobby, and themed areas like a library styled after Margot Tenenbaum. The third-floor pool area spans 30,000 square feet and is inspired by mid-century resorts in Acapulco and Havana. The restaurant echoes the look of a classic Miami living room with nautical details. Guest rooms are compact but thoughtfully designed, featuring custom beds, vintage décor, and views of either Biscayne Bay or the Atlantic. Head to The Goodtime Hotel’s website for more information.
