“When I was nine years old, I wrote a story about an evil golliwog. My mother read it and told me it was overly derivative and needed some work. Here we are,” said billy woods on his haunting new studio LP.
Named after the anti-Black caricature that is the “Golliwog” and inspired heavily by MF DOOM, GOLLIWOG expands the vast world of the elusive woods’ even further; (seemingly) fearless and frenetic, woods dives in head-first to his first solo LP in two years, presenting a humor-infused, horror-core homage to his past.
Equipped with his poignant pen and underground mentality, woods’ 18-track offering may have a honed-in vision, though it’s far from a solo endeavor. He tapped The Alchemist, Kenny Segal, EL-P, Conductor Williams, Preservation, Messiah Musik, Sadhugold, Ant (Atmosphere), Shabaka Hutchings, Steel Tipped Dove, DJ Haram, Willie Green, Jeff Markey, Saint Abdullah, and LA-based experimental jazz trio Human Error Club to contribute to the project’s production.
As for lyrical contributors, Backwoodz labelmates ELUCID and Cavalier hop on a couple of cuts, along with rappers Bruiser Wolf, Despot, Al.Divino, and singer-songwriter Yolanda Watson.
