With a subdued collection of all-black essentials, PANGAIA has unveiled one of its most impressive feats in sustainability yet. The purpose-driven apparel label has developed a 100% biobased nylon as a fossil fuel-free alternative to the ubiquitous material.

The plant-powered fabric is made through the transformation of castor oil-derived monomers into high-performance polyamide (PA), as opposed to the petrochemicals that are used to create plastic textiles like nylon. In addition to reducing reliance on fossil fuels in fashion, castor seeds also require minimal water use in cultivation. Shown in classic activewear silhouettes and basics, the pared-back collection highlights the material-focused aspect of the release, perhaps inaugurating a continuing evolution and further development. Highlights include the PLNT Nylon Jacket, a light and structured blouson boasting a tonal screen-printed text block, and the PLNT Nylon Track Pant, a relaxe fit trouser with biobased nylon drawcords and four functional pockets.  Fine details are closely considered, such as the zippers, which are made from recycled PET tape.

As the industry continues to reckon with its over-reliance on environmentally harmful petrochemical-derived materials, PANGAIA’s innovative collection presses upon activewear giants who still largely rely on plastic-based fabrics. However, PANGAIA emphasizes that this does not mean it is skimping out on quality, calling their product “a circular, responsible alternative without compromising strength, durability, or
versatility.”

The PANGAIA PLNT NYLON collection is out now at the brand’s official web store.
