French luxury house Marithé + François Girbaud are entering the mainstream trend with a new collaboration with the titular streetwear imprint, Supreme. The label, which was founded in 1972 by designers François Girbaud and Marithé Bachellere, has been renowned for its experimental approach to denim.

The fashion designer duo first began working with one another in the ’60s at a Paris clothing shop called Western House which imported utilitarian dark blue denim. At the Western House, the two began experimenting with different washes at local laundromats to get the desired fit and fade. The duo was the first introduce pre-wash denim to sale, later becoming a great hit. They are also responsible for pioneering treatments like stonewashing and laser engraving, to developing distinctive constructions and fits. By 1968, Marithé and François opened their own design studio, specializing in denim, moleskin and corudroy fabrics that are given their signature aging technique for the worn-in style. Over the decades, the two introduced knitwear, sportswear, children’s clothing and a specialized leather line, all of which take inspiration from their initial denim treatment techniques and shapes. Prior to breaking into the American market in the early ’80s, Marithé and François debuted their first baggy style with their X-pocket construction that broke the radically traditional American five-pocket jeans.

By 1968, Marithé and François opened their own design studio – importing denim, moleskin and corduroy fabrics, as well as aging leathers, to develop their own worn-in styles. Over the following decade, Marithé and François introduced knitwear, sportswear, children’s clothing, and a specialized leather line, all while continuing to experiment with denim treatments and shapes. By the early 1980s, the pair were beginning to break into the American market. In the ’90s, they had their “Shuttle” jeans which were inspired by the space cut design.

Bringing their knowledge of denim to the forefront in modern day, Supreme is going back to M+FG’s roots, for a denim focused collection that features a Leather Flight Bomber Jacket, Denim Trucker Jacket, Down Puffer Vest, Hockey Jersey, Hooded Sweatshirt, Leather Cargo Pant, Baggy Jean, Sweatpant, Denim Short, Tee, Camp Cap, Beanie, Tote Bag and Towel. The denim jackets and trousers sets take on various washes and colors, but remain true to M+FG’s history and Supreme’s oversized silhouettes, camo graphics and co-branding motifs. The latest collection, which gives classic denim staples a modern upgrade, focuses on M+FG’s touch on the industry for the past decades, making its way to mainstream with this latest collaboration.

The Supreme x Marithé + Françoise Girbaud Spring 2025 collaboration will see a global release via the official Supreme webstore starting April 3 and will be available in Asia on April 5.
