Adobe is marking 35 years of its industry-leading image and design application, Photoshop, by releasing a brand new mobile version that’s been built specifically with phones in mind – and, perhaps best of all, it’s free.

The new app is available now for iPhone and Adobe has promised that an Android version is “coming soon”. While users can choose to pay for certain “premium upgrades”, the free version includes many of the app’s most used features, like layering and masking that allow users to combine, composite and blend their images. Users can also remove, recolor and replace elements within their images using the Tap Select tool, or select the iconic Spot Healing Brush to “brush away distractions in seconds”. Adobe has also confirmed its newly built Photoshop mobile app has “direct integration” with others from its suite of creative mobile apps – like Express and Lightroom – affording users a seamless workflow between them.

Adobe’s AI tools have been integrated into the new Photoshop app, too, with Adobe Firefly and its popular Generative Fill and Generative Expand features made available with the free version of the new app. Additionally, users can take advantage of the vast library of assets available through of Adobe Stock at no extra cost, opening up a world of creative possibilities on-the-go.

“We’re excited to bring the limitless creative possibilities of Photoshop to mobile,” Adobe’s Ashley Still said, adding that the new app is for “everyone from professional artists and designers to a whole new generation of creators trying Photoshop for the first time. Photoshop’s new mobile and web apps unlock next generation creativity, empowering creators to bring to life gorgeous photos, rich graphics and incredible art anytime, anywhere.”

The brand also claims that the release of the new Photoshop mobile app marks “the first time image editing and design features and capabilities at this level of power, precision and control have been available for free in a single mobile app”. Additionally, Adobe has also made updates to its Adobe Photoshop web app, bringing features that have historically been bound to the the power of a desktop computer to web browsers worldwide, allowing users who don’t have the app installed to use it by leveraging the power of the cloud.

While the free version of the new Adobe Photoshop app is a welcomed step forward in the democratization of the creative industry, users wanting more advanced features are able to pay for the new Photoshop Mobile and Web plan priced at $7.99 USD/month or $69.99 USD/annually. Amongst the “premium” features included are advanced blend modes, over 20,000 fonts, AI-generated imagery that is commercially safe, and tools like Magic Wand, Clone Stamp and Content-Aware Fill.

The all-new Adobe Photoshop mobile app is available now for iPhone via the App Store. Stay tuned for news of the Android release.
