With a design that blends British craft heritage with Scandinavian design principles.
Summary
- Danish brand Tekla has opened its first store outside of Denmark, in London’s Marylebone
- Interiors blend Scandinavian aesthetic with British craft, and were designed by Mentze Ottenstein
Tekla has opened its first store outside of Denmark in London’s Marylebone, with interiors designed by Copenhagen-based studio Mentze Ottenstein.
Located on Marylebone High Street, the Tekla store once functioned as a branch of a high street bank, and is flanked by other lifestyle and fashion brands such as Aesop and Sandro.
Through the work of Mentze Ottenstein, the space has undergone a total transformation, with interiors that take cues from the Copenhagen store, but build on them to create a relationship with its new location.
A key way this has been achieved has been through the use of British materials and crafts. Partitions are created through heavy wool panelling sourced from Yorkshire, while blackened iron provides detailing throughout.
“British and Scandinavian design share an appreciation for natural materials and craftsmanship, but it was the playful exchange between these two sensibilities that was most inspiring, finding unexpected ways to let British wit meet Scandinavian clarity,” said Charlie Hedin, Founder and Creative Director at Tekla.
Across the space, zoning is created in order to contain the brand’s different categories. Bedding is located at the front of the store; terry cotton towels and robes in the middle; and sleepwear towards the back.
Archival pieces from Finnish brand Artek – a personal favorite of Hedin’s – are used throughout, and sit in dialogue with sculptural works by Sara Flynn. Also blending the past with the present, details from the original architecture have been brought back to life too, such as the original parquet floors, which were covered by concrete in the building’s former life.
