SOREL Redefines a Classic: The Big ‘Bou
The Caribou™ boot has over 60 years of heritage behind it, but now, the brand has reimagined the Big ‘Bou for modern wearers like creators Maurice Kamara, Skylar Marshai and Temi Ibisami.
SOREL’s journey began in 1962, as the brand set out to craft the ideal footwear to support Canadians through harsh winters. Using handmade rubber, wool and full-grain buff leather, the Kaufman Rubber Factory produced the first prototype of the Caribou™, and an icon was born.
The SOREL Caribou™ boot then crafted its own storied legacy. It went on to become one of the first shoes to grace the North Pole and also became the first snowboarding shoe in the ‘80s. Now based in Portland, the brand continues to create footwear for all weather conditions, year-round. SOREL’s Fall 2025 Horizon™ collection pushes this vision, extending it to contemporary, innovative models. Further marrying style and support, the Fall range boasts modern silhouettes and refreshed, vibrant colorways.
The collection’s bold elements were highlighted through an NYC stunt, in which creators Maurice Kamara, Skylar Marshai and Temitope Ibisami rode around the city streets handing out Big ‘Bou’s to their most stylish friends. Following other disruptive installations during NYFW and beyond, this is surely not the last time the brand will appear in the Big Apple.
Both men’s and women’s styles showcase SOREL’s innovation, and the key winter style, the Caribou Horizon™ GTX — or what a flurry of creators have dubbed the “Big ‘Bou” — is one of the brand’s most technically advanced yet. The Caribou™ is a classic SOREL offering — an inception point for the Horizon™ GTX iteration —which highlights luxurious details balanced with a rugged appeal.
Other technical specifications include modern improvements on the original model — making the silhouette more versatile than ever before. The boot is waterproof and includes over 200 grams of insulation paired with a GORE-TEX Membrane for extra warmth. LWG-certified leather delivers durability, while a Vibram outsole alongside the Caribou’s original lug pattern provides strong traction in any terrain.
