Brian Eno’s Kaleidoscopic ‘Blocks’ Paintings Go Up for Grabs

Ambient architect and artist Brian Eno is set to premiere his new painting series, Blocks, at London’s Paul Stolper Gallery. Created over the course of a two-day performance in his studio last summer, the collection consists of over 400 one-of-one birch ply panels; each of which will be up for grabs for £500 GPB (approximately $651 USD).

Eno undertook the project in August, setting out hundreds of wood pieces across his studio tables. To create these vivid color fields, he used spray paint atop stencils, found objects and dried pasta, placed intentionally and randomly, removing them one by one until they he felt they were finished or “got somewhere.”

While the artist is best known for his sonic works, Eno’s fascination with how sound and color, or compositions more broadly, occupy space has always been at the heart of his artistic philosophy. Improvisational in nature, this latest body of work reflects his exploration of generative art and music, an approach to creation that embraces the beauty of randomness and unpredictability, which can be traced back to his earliest works in the 1970s.

Measuring in at about seven-by-five inches, each work offers a unique visual experience, spanning quiet palettes and bold cascades of color. In addition to the single slabs, Blocks will feature a small series of four-panel works with an empty square gap in the center, emblematic of the interplay of positive and negative space integral to the process of painting itself.
