Charlie James Gallery presents Vidas, the first exhibition by Erick Medel with the gallery. Medel’s art captures intimate portraits of immigrant life using thread on denim, much like painting with oils. His canvas of choice is deep blue heavyweight denim, setting a dark backdrop for his vivid threadwork. Drawing inspiration from the lively Boyle Heights neighborhood, Medel’s pieces depict street festivals, everyday sidewalk scenes, and quiet, personal moments, celebrating the vibrancy of an immigrant community.

The works in Vidas offer a window into Medel’s community, finding beauty in everyday moments—whether it’s a tender handhold, a thoughtfully arranged bouquet, or a spirited block party. His technique on denim creates a dreamy, snapshot-like quality, with each piece resonating like a technicolor memory. These works, reflecting scenes from his life, honor the history and present of immigrant experiences in Los Angeles.

“Each work also holds personal significance, stemming from scenes encountered in life and rendered in rich, brushstroke-like stitches that celebrate the history and present of immigrant life and labor in Los Angeles,” said the gallery in a statement.
