X Is Removing the Ability To Hide the Blue Check
The change seemingly arrives after the tech platform began verifying users who did not sign up for premium.
It looks like there are new policy changes happening at X. The Elon Musk-owned social media platform has notified users that those who have a blue tick in the app will no longer have the option to hide it. The checkmark gives other users the impression that the account has paid for a verification or in some “influencers’” case who were gifted the check by Musk himself, it could make some think they paid for it.
The notification comes after X recently announced that users with over 2,500 verified followers will be receiving a free checkmark courtesy of the app. Many X users who paid for the premium did not want to be seen as paying for the tick, but now they will have no choice but to let the blue check fly. To X, the blue checkmark is a mark of authenticity as a part of their anti-bot measures. To Musk, this has always been his priority after taking over. The logic works so that the more real accounts have blue checks, the less likely it will stand out as a potential bot. At this time, X Premium has less than a million subscribers, which makes up less than 0.5% of the total X user base.
Musk originally suggested the change in hopes that it would be seen as perk. However, verified users do not seem to be pleased with it, as many do not want to be suspected of paying for X.
