URWERK’s UR-100V “Lightspeed” Offers a Snapshot of Our Solar System
Indicating the time taken for sun rays to reach the eight celestial bodies.
URWERK’s newest UR-100V model is bestowed the name of “Lightspeed” — a fitting title that nods to the watchmaker’s expansive endeavors in creating outer-space-themed watches.
Martin Frei, URWERK’s artistic director and co-founder likens his new creation to “having a piece of the universe on your wrist.” Featuring an imaginative dial design fitted with a 3D planetarium, spotlighting eight celestial bodies from our solar system. “Starting from the Sun, we calculated and illustrated the time taken for a ray of light to reach each of the planets. The Sun’s rays take 8.3 minutes to reach the Earth, while the same ray reaches the surface of Jupiter 35 minutes later,” explained Frei.
Measuring 43mm in width, the watch is crafted from grade 5 titanium and 52-layer thin ply carbon, arriving in DLC coated, sand and shot-blasted finish. Geared with 48 hours of power reserve, the timepiece runs on the UR 12.02, an in-house movement governed by a Windfänger airscrew and is fully exhibited through the watch’s open caseback.
Available for inquiry via URWERK’s official website, the UR-100V “Lightspeed” has a price tag of 65,000 CHF (around $74,599 USD).
