Horror Game 'Infestation 88' Transforms Mickey Mouse Into a Grotesque Entity
As ‘Steamboat Willie’ officially entered the public domain.
With Disney‘s Steamboat Willie officially in the public domain, Mickey Mouse has been transformed into a ghoulish villain for the upcoming horror game, Infestation 88.
According to reports, the title is developed by Nightmare Forge Games and is an episodic co-op survival horror game featuring one to four players. Each player is described as an exterminator that “[treats] sinister infestations caused by twisted versions of classic characters and urban legends,” and will need to find the source of the infestation by exploring different locations before being able to “subdue the outbreak.” One of those “twisted” characters seen in the trailer is Mickey Mouse, who is dressed in garb similar to his Steamboat Willie outfit.
A release date is yet to be announced but is currently planned for a PC via Steam release some time this year.
The Mickey Mouse seen in Steamboat Willie was officially made available for public use on January 1, as its 95-year copyright came to an end. “Ever since Mickey Mouse’s first appearance in the 1928 short film Steamboat Willie, people have associated the character with Disney’s stories, experiences, and authentic products,” a Disney rep previously said. “That will not change when the copyright in the Steamboat Willie film expires.”
