Engineered Garments’ Fall/Winter 2024 collection blends novelty with tradition. “The trigger for me was the desire to re-examine the fashion style that had the most impact on me during the early 1980s when I was in my twenties,” creative director Daiki Suzuki wrote in his notes. To create next season’s wardrobe, the designer began with the style tropes that defined his younger years — “Ivy League, outdoor, preppy, American workwear, vintage and cowboy styles” — and he merged them with the “European casual styles” and classic Japanese design of today. The result is a global melting pot of fashion design.

“I believe I’ve come to somewhat understand the importance of the goodness in basics, the intrigue of design, and their ability to coexist–emphasizing the significance of balance and harmony,” Suzuki added. ” I’m exploring how projecting my present self onto my past self from that time might manifest in my current style.”

In practice, the designer’s manifesto breeds a number of double-take-worthy ensembles. Suede harness vests layer over cotton-brushed trousers, and leopard jacquard coats meet corduroy bottoms. Gray herringbone caps complement jackets and sailor pants in the same textile, while a blue wool poly windowpane fabric composes a relaxed suit. A polyester shearling vest wraps around a flannel zip-up jacket in black, and a number of jacquard materials fuel the range with an intricate, patterned persona.

Overall, Suzuki’s bounty of references are on full display, and they mingle to form the modern Engineered Garments wardrobe — without clashing.
