The FIFA Museum has just announced the unveiling of “Designing the Beautiful Game,” an exhibition from the Design Museum in London that explores the story of how design has been used to push football to new limits.

Opening to visitors on October 13, the exhibition originally premiered at the Design Museum in London last year and marked the first major exhibition focusing on the design aspects of football. The premiere offered a slew of captivating narratives and immersive displays — and now, the exhibition has been developed in collaboration with the FIFA Museum.

The new collaborative display will bring additional objects from the museum’s own collection to create an experience tailored to the special exhibition space in Zurich. Additionally, the exhibition will explore the defining moments of football history through three main sections: Performance, Identity, and Crowds.

Each sector will approach the game through a unique perspective, using objects, photos, films, and sound clips while bringing design’s crucial role to the forefront of the world’s understanding of football history and development. Key parts of the exhibition will include the boots of Pelé and Lionel Messi’s shin pads, while visitors will also be able to explore the innovative kit advancements that have developed alongside the growth of the game.

Objects dating back to the very foundation of football’s 150-year history will also allow visitors to explore how equipment has evolved to fit the needs of the sport, comparing heavy leather balls of the first FIFA World Cup in 1930 to the lightweight, microchipped balls used during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

“Designing the Beautiful Game” will open on October 13, where admission is included with a regular museum ticket.

In other news, Tom Wood has opened a redesigned flagship store in Oslo.
