In an age where having the next best electronic device is considered a must, the levels of waste associated with this consumption are simultaneously rising. Today, reducing E-waste is becoming increasingly important as more organizations, communities and activists are raising awareness around the issue, one of which is Braun.

Originally established in 1921 as a repair-meets-design shop, the heritage German goods brand has always had craftsmanship at the heart of its ethos, consciously creating durable products as well as communicating the best ways to extend the life of them with their consumers. Now, bringing its 10 decades of technology upkeep into the E-waste conversation, Braun partners with content creator and eco-friendly stylist Felipe Pelaez to compile a few simple tips, of which every tech-lover can adopt to help reduce electronics waste.

“Shop quality over quantity”
Like Pelaez’ fashion choices, the stylist opts for high-quality electronic products made with robust materials and advanced craftsmanship. At Braun, the “good design” of its products are built on Dieter Rams‘ renowned 10 principles, in which the qualities of being environmentally-friendly, useful and long-lasting are noted. These principles have led the way at Braun and continue to inspire designers across the field of electronics to create well-considered products.

“Take care of your devices”
It’s only natural that taking good care of your devices slows down the process of them breaking. To avoid wear and tear as much as possible, Pelaez recommends reading care instructions on the often disregarded instructions booklet to keep each part of a product clean and in working-order. When you no longer have a use for it, having it in top-condition allows you to resell it, like you would with garments.

“When they don’t work, repair or recycle”
This final tip is perhaps the most important when avoiding waste. While it’s easy to throw broken devices away, take the time to get it repaired or head to a recycling center that responsibly discards or recycles electronics. For Pelaez, a little handiwork getting the product – whether its clothes or devices – back to working order is his solution before heading to the recycling center.

@soyraka [AD] Did you know that the problems around fast fashion and fast electronics are very similar? And it turns out, they both have similar solutions! Here's Braun’s guide for a better future. #Braun I know that it’s hard to make sustainable choices under capitalism. I think that just being aware of the consequences our consumption can have is the first step in the right direction. With that awareness and knowledge we can make better decisions even if we aren’t able to exclusively shop from 100% sustainable brands.
