Collegium Steps up the Sophistication With Its New Pillar Moc-Toe Derby

Nick Sisombath‘s Collegium has grown into a footwear brand for those in the know, putting quality first to create timeless on-foot classics. Now, the LA-based label expands its roster with the Pillar Moc-Toe Derby, a new style that sees Collegium step into a more formal, sartorial realm.

While the brand has previously explored penny loafers and the seminal GAT sneaker, its new Pillar Moc-Toe Derby welcomes a far more sophisticated feel. Speaking to Hypebeast, Sisombath said:

“One of our main goals was to challenge the utility of this timeless silhouette through both comfort and color. Traditionally, a structured shoe like this would be heavy, stiff, and not the most comfortable to wear all day. Our team worked day and night to implement an additional PU layer to the lasting board to pair with a removable PU insole, which is uncommon to find in these styles. To take this one step we partnered with the Italian outsole manufacturer, ‘XL EXTRALIGHT,’  with their disruptive lightweight injection moulded outsoles to approach this project through a different lens. A derby reimagined with a PU insole, padded lasting board, weighing in lighter than most athletic shoes, and with a current shape, we believe we believe developed something really special with modern timelessness at its core.”

Indeed, Collegium has. The new style arrives in “Nero” Italian calf leather, long-nap Italian suede in “Terracotta,” and like the latter pair, in either “Wheat” or “Olive.” For the special Collegium touch (that goes beyond just the use of premium materials and a beautifully-packaged box), we find the brand’s logo stamped into the lateral-side rear-quarter, and an insole decorated with a bubbly take on its moniker.

Collegium’s Pillar Moc-Toe Derby comes in sizes EU 39-47 and retails for $275 USD. All four colorways drop on Collegium’s website on May 23 at 10 a.m. PST/1 p.m. ET.
