Sillage Draws on Military Garments and Nepalese Culture for SS23
The latest oversized collection from Nicolas Yuthanan Chalmeau.
Nicolas Yuthanan Chalmeau likes to wear big and he wants you to wear big too. Crafted in limited quantities by master artisans in Japan, the Frenchman’s brand Sillage can be characterized by billowing silhouettes that only come in one size and is aesthetically inspired by the many cultures of the world. Recent highlights from the label include a gorgeous winter collection consisting of Harris Tweed and Sashiko fabrics, as well as an innovative down line with subtle floral motifs.
To follow, Sillage looks to Spring Summer 2023 with a selection of goods inspired by Nepal. Starting with the Gurkha Pants and Shorts, Chalmeau references the elite soldiers of the South Asian country, by creating a straight leg trouser with a unique cummerbund-style waistband, which can be “folded downwards over the front of the trousers, creating a relaxing silhouette for the warmer weather, while also allowing the wearer to be able to customize the length of their trousers/shorts to their choosing,” noted the designer in a statement. Matching the look is a versatile Henley Popover crafted in a jacquard, waffle, and herringbone ivory colorway, along with an organic chambray iteration.
After a trip to Nepal last summer, Yuthanan (as he likes to go by) came back with a number of finds, such as hand-woven baskets, antique wooden figurines, and a small batch of vintage trekking patches — the latter of which adorns the Nepal Souvenir Jacket Ecru. Standout items in the collection also include baggy military-inspired cargo pants and a ripstop coat inspired by the British “Mod” movement of the 1960s.
