Oversized Tables and Chairs Adorn Sweets Bank in Japan
Designed by Nikken Sekkei.

Tokyo-based architectural and engineering firm Nikken Sekkei has taken its expertise to Sweets Bank, which is the headquarters of the confectionary company, Shunkado. But what makes the design extra special is its witty design that features oversized tables and chairs.
Located in Hamamatsu City, Japan, the headquarters’ two-story glass block design is closed by oversized furniture, which is 13 times larger than its functional counterparts located in Shunkado’s cafe. Appearing in light-wood finishes, the furniture features minimal designs with curved lines and few streamlined components.
“The site’s outsized, but carefully designed tables and chairs are intended as an expression of the Shunkado corporate slogan: ‘we want people to spend family time at the table with sweets’,” stated Nikken Sekkei. “In the modern age of social media, in which a single photo can instantly capture hearts and minds, the image of the building itself becomes the medium, attracts people to regional cities, and creates memorable experiences for posting to the world.”
Under the eye-catching structures is Shunkado’s mixed-use facility headquarters, which includes a restaurant, cafe and a local bank branch. Take a look at the building design in the gallery above.
