Building upon existing features such as Smart Compose and Smart Reply, Google is bringing a whole new host of features to its Workspace suite starting with the first set of AI-powered writing features in Docs and Gmail followed by new functions on Sheets, Meet, and Chat.

To help get the juices flowing, Workspace can automatically generate a rough draft for a text document simply from the topic line. Once the text is finalized, a Rewrite function can then alter the text using different selected tones to be more formal, playful, etc. A random “I’m feeling lucky option” is also included if you’re willing to let the AI decide.

Other functions include auto-generated images, audio, and video in Slides, self-completing insights and analysis from raw data in Sheets, auto-generating backgrounds and capture notes in Meet, and new workflows in Chat.

The features are meant to enhance and assist rather than replace. “AI is no replacement for the ingenuity, creativity, and smarts of real people,” wrote Johanna Voolich Wright, VP of Product at Google Workspace in the press release. “Sometimes the AI gets things wrong, sometimes it delights you with something offbeat, and oftentimes it requires guidance.”

The new AI features on Google’s Workspace are set to release first for English users in the U.S. by the end of the month for trusted testers before rolling out in other countries and languages. More details can be found here.
