Burberry isn’t just a brand, it’s a cornerstone of our British identity. Founded more than 165 years ago by Thomas Burberry on the principle that clothing should be designed to protect people from the British weather, it went on to invent and create iconic elements of fashion that are still used today — such as gabardine and the Burberry Check — and now, the House is honouring its legacy in the self-titled book, Burberry.

Published by Assouline, Burberry features words by Alexander Fury (Fashion Features Director of AnOther Magazine and Men’s Critic for Financial Times) with a foreword by Carly Eck (Brand Curator, Archive, Burberry). Comprising five chapters across 252 pages, the coffee table book is destined for lovers of archives, heritage, and rich stories that tell something more than just a brand’s success, but how something such as Burberry became a staple of British culture, and went on to dominate further afield.

Furthermore, the book details everything from when the Norwegian polar explorer, zoologist and recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, Dr. Fridtjof Nansen took Burberry’s gabardine to the Arctic Circle in 1893, to how it created its signature trench coats and iconic symbols like the Check.

Speaking on this in more detail, Eck said: “Burberry is a story of creativity, exploration, innovation and community — all of which continue to be at the heart of the brand. In unearthing a dormant treasure trove, countless gold nuggets have been revealed. This book, the only one to be endorsed by the brand in recent times, presents a panorama of the company’s extraordinary heritage, which deserves to be widely celebrated. It’s the stuff of legends.”

Burberry by Burberry and Assouline retails for £150/$195 USD/€195 EUR, and is available to pre-order on Assouline’s website now. It will drop at Burberry and Assouline stores and online, officially, from March 28.

In case you missed it, cast your mind back to Daniel Lee’s debut Burberry show from London Fashion Week.
