BEYOND THE STREETS is spotlighting contemporary airbrushing in a new group exhibition at CONTROL gallery in Los Angeles. Entitled Under Pressure, the show bridges a dialogue between past and present by presenting the unique technical approaches of 16 artists, including Hank Reavis, Jasmine Monsegue, Kristofferson San Pablo, CHITO, Gustavo Zermeño Jr. and more.

Curated by legendary LA artist, Mister CARTOON, the exhibition maps out the historical significance of the airbrush — from its early usage in advertisements and graphic illustrations, as well as by the Pop Artists, who favored the tool for its connection to consumerism. As Los Angeles became the poster city for the automobile in the 1950s to ’60s, airbrushing took on new resonance through the custom decal work on hotrods and lowriders, emblematic of the Kustom Kulture movement.

“When I started airbrushing there was this huge wave in Southern California with custom vans where people started theming their cars with all these different kinds of murals,” remembers Mister CARTOON. “There was a Battlestar Galactica van, an E.T. van., and many others with Mexican Aztec type of artwork. It was mind-blowing to me. That same feeling is something I wanted to evoke for Under Pressure, to excite a new generation in a similar way I was all those years ago, while appreciating the evolution of this artform that has been so important to my career.”

The exhibition opened this past weekend and will be on view in LA until December 23. See the full list of exhibiting artists below.
