Sir Michael Caine Officially Retires From Acting
The 90-year-old actor’s career spans eight decades with more than 160 film appearances.
Sir Michael Caine has officially announced his retirement from acting.
The 90-year-old English actor confirmed the news during a recent interview with BBC Radio 4 and reaffirmed that he is serious about retiring this time around. “I keep saying I’m going to retire, well, I am now,” he shared. “I figured, I’ve had a picture which is — I played the lead and it’s got incredible reviews. The only parts I’m liable to get now are old men, 90-year-old men, well, maybe 85, and I thought, ‘Well I might as well leave with all this. I’ve got wonderful reviews. What am I going to do to beat this?’”
He added, “You don’t have leading men at 90, you’re going to have young, handsome boys and girls.”
Caine’s last acting role is Bernard Jordan in the recently-released film The Great Escaper, where he plays the real-life British World War II Royal Navy veteran who “broke out” of his nursing home in June 2014 to attend the 70th anniversary D-Day commemorations in France. The film has received praised from critics, with many applauding Caine’s performance.
A Korean War veteran himself, Caine’s acting career has spanned over eight decades and has appeared in more than 160 films. He began acting in the ’50s for a few uncredited roles and had his breakthrough in the ’60s, with younger audiences mostly knowing him from his roles in several Christopher Nolan films such as the Dark Knight trilogy, Interstellar, Inception, The Prestige and, most recently, Tenet. He has won several awards including two Academy Awards, a BAFTA Award, three Golden Globe Awards and a Screen Actors Guild Award during his time in the industry.
