Beijing-based architectural firm, MAD has unveiled its design for a renovation project on an old warehouse that’s situated on the south side of the Shanghai Zhangjiang Cement Factory. The location was once home to one of the largest cement factories during the peak of the city’s urban construction. For this project, MAD will be transforming the site into a multifunctional public area that unites nature, commerce, and culture.

According to the official press release, the architects intend to preserve the original architectural structure of the site. Instead, the team aims to breathe new life into the former industrial site imbuing “a three-dimensional hierarchy of time and physical dimensions through the juxtaposition of old and new structures.” According to the renders, this is translated into an ark-like roof that appears as if it’s floating above.

Playing on the contrast of smooth futuristic aesthetics against the rustic appeal of industrial dilapidation, the factory space will feature a new face that is much brighter and open. Its west wall will be fitted with full-face suspended glass curtain walls, inviting ample natural light from the outside to illuminate the space.

Upon entering the space, visitors are welcomed with a long metal stairway that leads up what seems like an ominous spaceship, but in reality, it ascends to an oasis-like rooftop area.

Speaking on this project, Ma Yansong, MAD’s founder commented that “Industrial heritage is preserved and utilized not only because of the historical memories it carries, but more importantly because it gives the future a sense of history. So we don’t need to celebrate and consolidate industrial aesthetics here, but rather focus on the spirit of the contemporary and the future.”
