'The Exorcist: Believer' Tops the Domestic Box Office With $27 Million USD Debut

The Exorcist: Believer claimed the top spot at the domestic box office over the weekend, raking in an estimated $27.2 million USD from 3,663 theaters. Additionally, the R-rated horror pic accumulated $17.9 million USD from its first 40 markets overseas, moving its global tally to $45.1 million USD.
While the results were strong for the present-day climate, the figures did fall short of expectations, which were set in the $30 million USD to $36 million USD margin. The David Gordon Green-direct film’s predecessor, The Exorcist, made history exactly 50 years ago upon its release, earning almost $450 million USD at the global box office before inflation adjustments.
Universal reportedly shelled out $400 million USD for the rights to the successful franchise, and Believer cost the company approximately $30 million USD to produce, alongside Blumhouse and Morgan Creek. The production imprint already has two more Exorcist installments in the pipeline, with the sequel scheduled to arrive in theaters in 2025.
Believer marks the fourth film in the Exorcist franchise, following The Exorcist (1973), Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977) and The Exorcist III (1990). Notably, Believer sees Ellen Burstyn reprise her role as Chris MacNeil from the original film, with additional cast members including Olivia O’Neill, Lidya Jewett, Leslie Odom Jr., Jennifer Nettles, Okwui Okpokwasili and more.
