Adidas Originals Celebrates Stan Smith's 1972 Wimbledon Win With "Stanniversary" Sneaker

Stan Smith defeated Ilie Năstase to win the 1972 Wimbledon Championship, and while this was the legendary tennis player’s only Wimbledon win, it still marks a notable part of his legacy. 50 years on, adidas Originals now celebrates this momentous occasion with the Stan Smith “Stanniversary,” a sneaker that harks back to the shoe that was on Smith’s feet when he won.

Releasing in a vintage concoction of “Off White/Cream White/Cloud White,” this anniversary-celebrating pair throws it back to the sneaker’s tennis-playing heydays with a light blush of color adding detail to the pair. Specifically, a light red tone decorates a synthetic tongue — a material not commonly used on this pair. Here, you’ll find adidas branding alongside the “Endorsed by Stan Smith” portrait graphic in burgundy, while a slither of yellow detailing outlines the white leather heel.

Alongside this is a “Cloud White” suede heel tab marked with adidas Originals’ signature Trefoil emblem and the Stan Smith moniker. Various details, both traditional and new, have been added to make this pair stand out even further, from the embossed and un-colored Stan Smith branding on the mid-panels near the perforated Three Stripes to the writing on the interior collar, which reads “JUN, 06, 1972.”

To round this pair off, adidas Originals has made the upper using at least 50% recycled materials, once again adding another shoe to its sustainable focus.
