NAMESAKE's SS22 "Open Gym" Collection Celebrates Trial by Fire
Referencing the brothers’ experience with Tokyo, Basketball, and music.
NAMESAKE has just debuted its Spring/Summer 2022 lookbook.
In the backdrops of a derelict building, the “Open Gym” collection is displayed. This collection maintains the label’s exploration into family and personal trials, all through the common connection of sports — mainly basketball. In this chapter of NAMESAKE, the collection takes us back to when the brothers traveled to Tokyo 10 years ago. This is about entering a foreign environment and proving your worth in the face of a new challenge or barrier.
Sprinkled into the collection are references from some of NAMESAKE’s most inspirational figures in the NBA — Dennis Rodman and his extravagant style, as well as the Detroit Piston’s “Bad Boys” and their relentless behavior. The label explains that the focus was to “bend” their childhood style into a new vision, commenting, “Capturing their memories of afterschool times tirelessly practicing in the gym and sitting next to the river stream next to the school, goalessly wrestling for their inner truth. Foolishly, relentlessly, and courageously wasting their time away —— in the end, to relentlessly find their own inner utopia in an apocalyptic territory. With the fourth season, NAMESAKE aims to enrich their sport-agricultural origin by adding new energy of youth and renovated vision of what the 2000s meant to them.”
As mixtapes played a large part in their training and inspiration, music was referenced and translated into the cutting; R&B, more fluid and softer fabrics; electronic, rough edges and stiffer fabrics; hip-hop, more aggressive all-over graphics; and J-pop, vivid color combinations with playful cuts. In continuing their efforts in sustainability, an additional application of organic and nature-conscious materials and construction was applied. This can be seen in the pineapple yarn, tercel, recycled poly, and paper-based woven fabrics.
